Toll scam texts aren't new, Scamwatch has logged reports of them for years, but the current wave is worth a fresh look because it's noticeably harder to spot than earlier versions.
What the text usually says
It claims you have an outstanding toll payment, often a small, believable amount, and includes a link to "settle" it before a late fee applies. The link goes to a page built to closely resemble a real toll operator's site, and asks for your card details.
Linkt, EastLink, and other Australian toll operators don't send payment demands by text with a clickable link.
If you're genuinely unsure whether you owe a toll, go directly to the operator's website by typing the address yourself, or call the number on your existing account statement, never the number or link in the text.
Why this version is more convincing
Earlier versions of this scam often had obvious spelling mistakes and a generic-looking link. Newer versions use a domain name that closely resembles the real one, and a payment page copied closely enough that it's genuinely hard to tell at a glance.
What to do if you get one
Don't click the link. Delete the text, or forward it to 7726 (which spells SPAM on most keypads) to report it to your telco for free. If you're worried you might have a real toll outstanding, check directly through the operator's official app or website, not through anything the text points you to.
If you've already clicked the link and entered card details, contact your bank immediately using the number on the back of your card, and consider a call to IDCARE for support.
