Five minutes to lock down your Apple ID or Google account

These two accounts quietly hold more of your life than almost anything else you own. A five-minute check is worth doing today.

Your Apple ID or Google account isn't just for email, it's usually connected to your photos, your contacts, your location, and often your payment details too. It's one of the highest-value targets on your phone, which makes it worth a few minutes of attention.

Check your recovery details

Make sure the recovery email address and phone number on the account are current ones you actually check. If a recovery option is outdated, it becomes a weak point rather than a safety net.

Check what's signed in

Both Apple and Google let you see a list of devices currently signed into your account. If anything on the list isn't yours, or is a device you replaced years ago, remove it.

A five-minute check now is far easier than untangling a compromised account later.

Turn on two-step verification if it isn't already on

Both platforms support an extra verification step beyond your password. If you haven't already, this is worth doing straight after checking your recovery details and signed-in devices.

Where to find these settings

Apple's official support site and Google's official support site both walk through exactly where to find each of these settings for your specific device.
